Caden

By the time we leave the theater, the rain is coming down in sheets. We stand under the marquis overhang while Karl pulls the limo around, and Cicily whispers into my ear. “What do you say we go back to the hotel, get our things, and go back to my dorm room? Emily won’t be back until tomorrow night.”

It was a good night, despite the pouring rain and the hotel disaster, which, incidentally, made me feel like a fucking idiot. Weak. Pathetic. She didn’t seem to mind at all, though. We laughed as we got drenched rushing to our reservations at an Indian restaurant in a better part of the city that Victoria had booked us into, and stomped through puddles on our way to the theater, so by the time we sat in our seats we were shivering and soaked, but still happy as hell. While the play wasn’t theatrical magic and I’ve never been much of a thespian, there were worse ways to spend an evening. The important thing was the company. And the company had finally decided to grant me mercy from that shithole of a hotel.

“Fuck our stuff,” I groan, nuzzling into her ear, making her giggle. “I’ll send Karl to pick it up. I need to get you to bed.”

“That sounds like a good idea,” she says, standing on her toes and kissing me.

I start to whisper exactly what I’m going to do to her, when a voice shouts, “Hey, Silly!”

Cicily looks around, and it’s only then I realize. Not a week in college and she already has a nickname. She’s Silly. Somehow I thought—or hoped— I was the only one who she could let her hair down and be silly around. But I guess I was wrong.

I follow her line of sight. Dammit. It leads right to that red-headed kid I’d seen when I was moving her in. Rick, or something. Once again he’s smiling like he wants to get into her pants. And Cicily hasn’t gotten any wiser to his game. She smiles and says, “Oh, my God, hi!” as if she hasn’t seen him in ages.

I may not be as close to her life as I should be, but didn’t she say she just saw him last night at that monster encounter she was so enthralled about?

They start talking about something for class, as I stand there like the third wheel. That is, until I clear my throat and she remembers I’m there. She says, “You remember my boyfriend, Caden? Caden, remember Ryan?”

We give each other cursory nods, just as icy as the first time.

The limo comes, and I relish the way the little prick’s jaw hangs slightly open, just a little too much. As I’m standing there, watching him ogle my sweet ride and feeling oh-so-smug, a foreign thought comes to my head. Damn right I’m better than you. And then I realize a funny thing. All my life, I’d never used my wealth to make me feel better about myself. Never needed to, because I was never afraid of losing.
